Why crashes happen on the M1 and Princes Highway
The M1 Pacific Motorway and the Princes Highway carry the two worst crash patterns for prestige cars outside Sydney. On the M1 between Berowra and Ourimbah, the issue is speed differential: traffic bunches at the Hawkesbury River bridge and at the Mount White weighbridge, then opens up again, and a rear-ender at 100 km/h writes off a European car quickly. Northbound on a Friday after 3pm is the worst window, and the F3/M1 merge at Wahroonga catches drivers who have been on the road since the city.
On the Princes Highway south of Waterfall, the problems are different. The road is two lanes in each direction with cross traffic at Helensburgh, Stanwell Tops and the Bulli Pass turn-off. Right-turners at Thirroul and Woonona are a common cause of side-impact crashes, and the Sea Cliff Bridge stretch is narrow enough that a minor error becomes a panel and suspension job.
Around Gosford and Erina, the Central Coast Highway and the Brisbane Water Drive intersections produce a steady stream of low-speed but expensive collisions. A tap at 40 km/h in a Range Rover can mean a new bumper, parking sensors, radar and headlight unit, which is why like-for-like matters even when the crash looks minor.
If you drive a prestige car, the repair bill is rarely small. That is the reason a proper replacement car matters, not just any hire car.
What to do after a crash near Wollongong or Gosford
The first hour sets up your claim. Do these things in order, whether you are on the M1 near Mount Kuring-gai or on Corrimal Street in Wollongong.
- Stop, check everyone is okay, and call 000 if anyone is injured.
- Move off the traffic lanes if the cars are drivable. On the M1, get to the shoulder or the next exit; on the Princes Highway, pull into a side street or a service station.
- Exchange names, addresses, phone numbers, licence numbers, registration and insurer details with the other driver. Photograph their licence and rego sticker.
- Photograph everything: all four corners of both cars, the road, the signage, the position of the vehicles before you move them, and any skid marks.
- Get names and numbers of witnesses. On the M1, a truck driver or a commuter who stopped is gold.
- Report to police if anyone is injured, if a driver left the scene, or if the damage looks over the reporting threshold. You can do this at Gosford or Wollongong police station.
- Call your insurer to lodge the claim, then call us to arrange the replacement car.
Do not admit fault at the scene, even if you think you caused it. Fault is decided by insurers and, if it goes that far, by a court. Keep your version of events factual and brief.
If you are unsure about the not-at-fault rules in NSW, read our not at fault explained guide before you speak to the other driver's insurer.

Age limits are set per car. Drivers under 25 can hire most cars with Young Driver Cover; the exact terms are shown before you pay.
Towing and repairer options outside Sydney
Towing is where country and coastal crashes get expensive. A tow from the M1 at Berowra to a prestige repairer in Artarmon can cost more than the repair if you let the wrong operator take it. You have the right to nominate the repairer and the tow destination, but you must say so before the truck hooks up.
Around Wollongong, there are competent repairers in Fairy Meadow, Unanderra and Albion Park Rail, but not all of them are approved by every insurer, and not all have the equipment for aluminium-bodied cars. Around the Central Coast, Somersby, Tuggerah and Erina have good shops, but the specialist European repairers tend to be in Sydney. If your car is a Range Rover, a Porsche or an AMG, the panel shop that fixes a Corolla may not have the jigs or the diagnostic software.
Your options are:
- Repair locally at an insurer-approved shop, which is faster but may not be prestige-specialist.
- Tow to a Sydney prestige repairer, which takes longer but protects resale and warranty.
- Use your own choice of repairer, which you are entitled to do, and let the insurer negotiate on price.
Whichever you choose, get the tow and the repairer in writing before the truck leaves. Our repairs and write-offs page covers how to handle the insurer if they push back.

Start my claimReplacement car delivery to Wollongong and the Central Coast
Delivery is the whole point for the Illawarra and the Coast. Our cars are based at Mascot and Merrylands, and we bring them to you, whether that is a driveway in Figtree, a workplace in North Wollongong, a motel in Terrigal or a repairer in West Gosford.
Here is how it works:
- You call or book online and tell us where the car is and where you are.
- We confirm the replacement car, the delivery time and the paperwork.
- We deliver the car, walk you around it, note the fuel and condition, and you drive away.
- When your car is ready, we collect the replacement from the same place, or you can drop it at a Sydney base if that suits.
Typical delivery windows are within a few hours for the Wollongong and Illawarra area and same or next day for the Central Coast, depending on traffic and availability. We do not ask you to catch a train to Mascot. If you are in Nowra or Kiama, tell us at booking, because the run is longer and we plan it differently.
The minimum driver age is 20 on most cars and 25 or 30 on some. The rate, the bond and any fees are shown on the car's page before you pay. The bond equals the excess you choose. Paying by card carries a small surcharge; bank transfer and cash on the rental do not. Cars can be booked from a single day.
Bookings are fulfilled by Drive Tribe (drivetribe.com.au), and this site is part of that group.
What like-for-like means when you drive a European car
Like-for-like does not mean "a car". It means a car of similar size, type, prestige and automatic transmission to the one you were driving. If your BMW 5 Series is in for repairs, a Corolla is not like-for-like, and the at-fault insurer knows it.
The law in NSW comes from the decision in Arsalan v Rixon, which confirmed that a not-at-fault driver can recover the reasonable cost of a replacement vehicle that is comparable to their own, even if they did not hire one themselves. That is the basis of credit hire.
What that looks like in practice:
- A luxury SUV owner gets a luxury SUV, not a compact.
- A seven-seat family car gets a seven-seat replacement.
- A performance car gets something with comparable power and driving position.
If you drive a European car, the replacement should feel familiar. That means the same class of vehicle, the same seating, and the same automatic gearbox. For a family that has just been hit on the M1 near Ourimbah, a seven-seat replacement keeps school runs and sport runs going.

How long you can keep the replacement car
You can keep the replacement car for the reasonable time it takes to repair or replace your own. That is not an open-ended period, and it is not a fixed number of days. It is the time a competent repairer needs, plus a reasonable allowance for parts and insurer approval.
In practice, for a prestige car in NSW:
- A bumper and sensor repair: a week to ten days.
- A panel and paint job with parts from Germany: two to four weeks.
- Structural or aluminium repair: four to eight weeks or more.
- A write-off: until the payout is settled and you have a new car, which can be two to six weeks.
The insurer will usually want to cut the hire off as soon as the repair is done, and sometimes before. If they delay approval, the clock should not run against you. Keep every email and note the dates.
If your car is repaired locally at Fairy Meadow or Tuggerah, you can keep the replacement until you collect it. If it is towed to Sydney, you can keep the replacement until it is back in your driveway, or drop it at Mascot on the way home.
Our how long does an accident replacement car take page sets out the timelines in more detail.
Dealing with an insurer based in Sydney
Most at-fault insurers for crashes in the Illawarra and on the Central Coast are headquartered in Sydney, and their assessors and call centres work Sydney hours. That is fine, but it changes the rhythm of the claim.
What to expect:
- The insurer will call you within a day or two and ask for a recorded statement. Keep it factual. Do not guess at speed or distance.
- They may offer you a hire car from their own supplier. You are not obliged to take it if it is not like-for-like. You can use your own replacement and claim the reasonable cost.
- They may ask you to take your car to their assessment centre at Silverwater or Padstow. You can agree, but you can also ask for a mobile assessor or send photos.
- They may dispute the hire rate. That is normal. The rate, the bond and any fees are shown on the car's page before payment, and we provide the paperwork to support the claim.
If the insurer refuses the claim or delays, our dealing with insurers and insurer disputes hire car claim pages explain the next steps.
If the at-fault driver is from Sydney, the claim is still handled the same way. The crash location does not change your rights.
What to do if your car is a write-off
A write-off is not the end of your claim. It changes what you are entitled to. If your car is declared a total loss and you are not at fault, you can generally claim the market value of your car, plus the reasonable cost of a replacement car while you find a new one.
Steps to take:
- Get the written assessment and the payout figure in writing.
- Check whether the insurer is using market value or an agreed value. If you have agreed value, that is the starting point.
- Do not accept the first offer without checking comparable cars for sale.
- Keep the replacement car until you have the funds and a new car, within reason.
- If the at-fault insurer is slow, your own insurer may pay and recover later, depending on your policy.
For prestige cars, the gap between market value and replacement cost can be large. That is what gap cover is for, and it is worth checking your policy before you need it. This is general information, not personal financial advice. Talk to your accountant or solicitor about your situation.

Business fleets on the Coast and in the Illawarra
If you run a fleet, a crash on the M1 or the Princes Highway is a productivity problem, not just a repair bill. A sales rep stuck in Gosford without a car loses a day of calls. A trades business in Unanderra loses a ute and a job.
For not-at-fault crashes, the same like-for-like principle applies to business vehicles. A ute or a van should be replaced with something that can do the work. A prestige company car should be replaced with a prestige car, because that is what your clients see.
What fleet managers should do:
- Keep a one-page crash procedure in every vehicle.
- Record the driver's licence, rego and insurer details at the scene.
- Call us before you call the at-fault insurer, so the replacement is arranged without delay.
- Keep the hire paperwork with the claim file.
We work with fleet managers, smash repairers, solicitors and brokers across the Illawarra and the Central Coast. If you refer clients, our partners and referrals page explains how that works.

- Call 000 if anyone is hurt.
- Photograph everything before the cars are moved.
- Exchange details with the other driver, including their insurer.
- Collect witness names and numbers.
- Report to police if required.
- Call your insurer and lodge the claim.
- Call us to arrange a like-for-like replacement, delivered to Wollongong, Gosford or wherever you are.
- Do not sign anything from the at-fault insurer without reading it, and do not accept a hire car that is not comparable.
- Keep a folder, digital or paper, with every photo, email and receipt.
If you are in Wollongong, the nearest hospital is Wollongong Hospital on Loftus Street. On the Central Coast, it is Gosford Hospital on Holden Street. If you are shaken up, get checked. Whiplash symptoms often show up the next morning.
