Crash on the M4 or M7: Getting a Replacement Car

Genesis GV80 photo 5
Genesis GV80 photo 5

If you are reading this on the shoulder of the M4 near Eastern Creek with traffic thundering past, the order of operations matters: get everyone to safety, call 000 if anyone is hurt, then deal with the tow, the report and the replacement car. A motorway crash is not like a prang at a Newtown intersection. You are often far from home, the car is undriveable, and the nearest suburb with a coffee is ten minutes away.

This is the plain-English sequence for drivers of prestige and performance cars, from the first two minutes on the breakdown lane to the day your own car comes back from the repairer.

Key takeaways

  • Get out on the passenger side and behind the barrier before you think about the car, because the M4 and M7 are 110 km/h roads.
  • On a controlled-access motorway you rarely choose the tow, so photograph the docket and the yard name before the car leaves.
  • Ask for the police event number at the scene; it is the reference every insurer and hire company will want.
  • A not-at-fault replacement car can be delivered to your home, workplace or repairer, and credit hire means you are not out of pocket upfront.
  • Motorway repairs take longer because of structural assessment, parts lead times and sensor recalibration, so the replacement car is not a luxury.

What to do immediately after a motorway hit

The M4 and M7 are 110 km/h roads for most of their length, so the first priority is not the car. It is not being hit a second time.

  1. Get out on the traffic side, never the traffic side. Exit through the passenger door if it opens, or climb across. Put passengers behind the barrier, up the embankment, well clear of the shoulder.
  2. Hazards on, ignition off. If the car will not move and you are in a live lane, get out and get behind the barrier. Do not stand between your car and the traffic to inspect damage.
  3. Call 000 if anyone is injured or a lane is blocked. The M4 and M7 are controlled-access motorways, so police and Transport for NSW traffic response crews coordinate the scene.
  4. Photograph everything before the tow arrives. Both number plates, the position of the cars in the lane, skid marks, the other driver's licence and registration, and the general scene including the nearest exit sign. This is the raw material for the liability argument later.
  5. Do not admit fault, and do not argue. Swap details, stay calm, and let the evidence do the talking.

If your car is a prestige or performance model, note the exact trim and any factory options before it leaves your sight. That detail becomes the basis of a like-for-like replacement claim, which is covered in more depth on our like-for-like replacement cars hub.

Towing from the M4, M7 or M5 and where the car goes

On a controlled-access motorway, you generally do not get a free choice of tow operator. Transport for NSW and NSW Police run heavy tow and incident response arrangements on the M4, M7 and M5, and the priority is clearing the lane. A tow truck will be dispatched to remove the vehicle to a safe location, and it will usually go to a holding yard or a nominated depot near the motorway, not to your preferred repairer in Artarmon.

What you can control is what happens next.

  • Ask the tow operator, or the attending officer, for the name of the yard and the tow docket number. Photograph the docket.
  • If the car is driveable and only cosmetic, you may be able to move it yourself to the next exit and off the motorway before arranging a tow on your own terms.
  • If you have a preferred smash repairer, tell the tow company as soon as the car is off the motorway. Once it is in a holding yard, moving it again is another fee and another delay.
  • Do not sign anything that authorises repairs or releases the vehicle to a third party you have not chosen.

If the car is a write-off, the assessment process is different and is set out in our guide to repairs and write-offs.

Getting yourself and passengers home safely

This is the part people underestimate. A crash at the M4 and M7 interchange at 6pm on a Tuesday can leave you standing on a grass verge in Prospect with no ride and a phone at 12 per cent.

If you are uninjured, the practical options are:

  • Family or a friend. The most reliable, but they may be an hour away in peak hour.
  • Rideshare or taxi. Fine for getting home, but it does nothing about the car, and the driver may not want to stop on a motorway shoulder. Arrange pickup from the nearest safe location, such as a service centre or an off-ramp.
  • A replacement car delivered to you. If liability is not in dispute, a not-at-fault replacement vehicle can be arranged and delivered. That is the whole point of the service, and you can start the process from the roadside once you have the other driver's details.

If you are in Western Sydney and stranded, the same-day option is usually a delivery to your home, your workplace, or the repairer. Cars based at Parramatta and Merrylands sit close to the M4 corridor, which shortens the wait considerably.

Reporting to police and Transport for NSW

In NSW you must report a crash to police if anyone was injured, if a vehicle was towed away, or if the other driver failed to stop and exchange details. On a motorway, police are often already attending, and the officer will take statements and record the incident. Ask for the event number before you leave the scene.

If police did not attend, you can report the crash at a police station or through the NSW Police online reporting system. Do it the same day. The event number is the reference every insurer and hire company will ask for.

Transport for NSW also matters on motorways for two reasons:

  • Traffic camera footage. Transport for NSW operates the camera network on the M4, M7 and M5. Footage is generally retained for a limited period and is not released to the public as a matter of course, but it can be requested through the correct process, often with police assistance or a solicitor's letter.
  • Incident records. The traffic response crews log incidents, including lane closures and the time they attended. That log can corroborate your account of where and when the crash happened.

Write your own timeline the same night. Times, lanes, weather, what the other driver said, what the officer said. Memory fades fast, and a contemporaneous note is worth more than a reconstruction three weeks later. Our page on evidence that supports a like-for-like claim sets out what to keep.

Arranging a replacement car from a service centre or suburb

Once you are off the motorway and safe, the replacement car becomes a logistics problem. You need a vehicle that matches what you were driving, delivered to a location that works, without you paying upfront and chasing reimbursement for months.

That is what credit hire is for. The hire is arranged on the basis that the at-fault party's insurer will meet the reasonable cost, and you are not out of pocket while the claim runs. The mechanics are explained on our how credit hire works page.

Where the car comes from matters less than how fast it can reach you. If you are stuck near Eastern Creek or Prospect, a base at Parramatta or Merrylands is minutes away. If you have been taken to hospital or you work in the CBD, delivery to the city or to your home in the Hills is the practical answer.

Why motorway repairs often take longer

A low-speed car park scrape and a 100 km/h motorway impact are different repair jobs, even when the visible damage looks similar in a photo. Motorway crashes tend to involve higher energy, which means the damage runs deeper than the panels.

Common reasons the repair takes longer:

  • Structural assessment. Suspension pick-up points, subframes, chassis rails and the floor pan may need measuring on a jig, and that is a specialist job with a queue.
  • Parts availability. Prestige and performance models often need parts from Germany, the UK or Japan. Air freight is possible but adds days, and some trim pieces are made to order.
  • Calibration. Modern cars need radar, camera and sensor recalibration after panel work. That requires specific equipment and a road test, and not every repairer has it.
  • Paint matching. Multi-stage and pearl finishes take longer to blend than a solid colour.

A prestige repair in Sydney can run for weeks, and the timeline varies by marque, part and repairer workload. We cover the realistic ranges in how long prestige car repairs take in Sydney. That is exactly why the replacement car matters: a fortnight without your own car is a fortnight of changed plans.

Dashcam and traffic camera footage

On a motorway, liability usually turns on one question: who changed lanes, and when. Dashcam footage settles that argument faster than any written statement.

If you have a dashcam, do this the same day:

  1. Stop recording and remove the card, or lock the current file so it is not overwritten.
  2. Copy the file to a laptop or cloud storage, not just the card.
  3. Note the exact time offset on the camera, because it is often a few minutes out.
  4. Send the file to your insurer, the hire company and your solicitor if you have one, and keep the original.

If you do not have a dashcam, the other driver may. Ask early, through your insurer or the police officer, because footage is often overwritten within days. Transport for NSW camera footage on the M4 and M7 can also be requested, but it is not automatic and the retention window is short.

Witnesses matter just as much. On a motorway, other drivers rarely stop, but a truck driver or a roadside worker may have seen everything. Get names and numbers at the scene if it is safe to do so.

Following up on liability

Liability is not decided at the scene. It is decided when the insurers have the police event number, the photographs, the dashcam footage and the statements. Your job is to make sure that material reaches the right people quickly.

A practical follow-up routine:

  • Day one: report to police if required, notify your insurer, and start the replacement car process if you are not at fault.
  • Day two to three: send photographs and footage, and confirm the other driver has lodged a claim.
  • Week one: confirm the at-fault insurer has accepted liability. If they have not, ask why in writing.
  • Ongoing: keep every message, docket and receipt in one folder.

If the other insurer disputes liability or refuses the hire, that is a familiar problem and it is dealt with on our insurer disputes page. If you are a fleet manager or a repairer who refers clients, the arrangements are set out under business and fleet and partners and referrals.

Questions people ask

Can I choose which tow truck takes my car from the motorway?
Usually not. On the M4, M7 and M5, Transport for NSW and NSW Police control incident response and the priority is clearing the lane, so a tow is dispatched to you. Once the car is off the motorway you can arrange to move it to your preferred repairer, but that is a second tow and a second fee. Ask for the yard name and docket number, photograph them, and tell the tow company where you want the car to end up as soon as it is safe.
How do I get a replacement car if I am stranded in Western Sydney?
Start the process from the roadside once you have the other driver's details and the police event number. If liability is not in dispute, a not-at-fault replacement car can be arranged and delivered to your home, your workplace or the repairer. Cars based at Parramatta and Merrylands are close to the M4 corridor, so delivery times in Western Sydney are usually shorter than for bases on the other side of the city.
Does a motorway crash take longer to repair?
Often yes. Higher-speed impacts are more likely to involve structural damage, which means measuring on a jig, and prestige and performance models frequently need parts shipped from overseas. Sensor and radar recalibration after panel work adds time too. A prestige repair in Sydney can run for weeks depending on the marque, the parts and the repairer's workload, which is why a like-for-like replacement car matters for the whole period.
What if the other driver does not stop on the motorway?
Report it to police as soon as you can, because failing to stop and exchange details is a reportable matter. Give them the time, direction of travel, nearest exit or camera gantry, and any partial plate you saw. If you have dashcam footage, preserve it immediately. An uninsured or unidentified driver makes the claim harder, but it does not automatically end your options, and you should speak to your insurer and, if needed, a solicitor about the next step.
Do I have to use the repairer my insurer recommends?
You can generally choose your own repairer, though your insurer may have a network with streamlined processes. If you drive a prestige or performance car, a specialist repairer with the right equipment and calibration tools is often the better choice. Tell the tow company and your insurer where you want the car to go, and keep a record of that instruction. If there is a dispute about the repairer or the assessment, get it in writing.
How soon can a replacement car reach me after a motorway crash?
It depends on where you are, what you were driving and whether liability is clear. In many not-at-fault cases a car can be arranged the same day and delivered to your home, workplace or the repairer. If your exact model is not immediately available, an equivalent vehicle in the same tier is the usual answer, and the assessment process is explained on our equivalence pages. Start the request as soon as you have the other driver's details.
