Can I get a replacement car the same day?

Sometimes yes, and sometimes it takes until tomorrow. A replacement car can be in your driveway the same evening if the other driver's fault is clear, your documents are ready and a like-for-like vehicle is sitting free on the fleet.

What slows it down is almost never the car. It is the paperwork, the tow truck, a disputed version of events or an insurer that will not answer the phone. This page sets out exactly what has to be true for a same day replacement car after an accident in Sydney, and what you can do from the roadside to make it happen.

Key takeaways

  • A same day replacement car is realistic if fault is clear, your documents are ready and a like-for-like vehicle is free on the fleet.
  • The practical cut-off for a same day delivery in most of Sydney is around 2pm, with evening deliveries between 6pm and 9pm.
  • A towed car does not stop a same day replacement, but you need the yard address and the tow docket number.
  • With credit hire, a later liability dispute is a matter between the hire company and the at-fault insurer, not a bill that lands on you mid-hire.
  • Having your licence, your registration and photos of the other driver's details ready before you call is the single biggest thing you control.

What same day actually means in Sydney

Same day means the car is in your hands before you go to bed, not that someone answered the phone quickly. In practice there are three cut-off points in a Sydney working day.

  • Before about 2pm. If fault is clear and documents are in, a delivery in the inner suburbs, the North Shore or the Eastern Suburbs is realistic the same afternoon or early evening.
  • Between 2pm and 5pm. You are usually looking at an evening delivery, often between 6pm and 9pm, once the fleet car has been cleaned and checked back in.
  • After 5pm. Most same day deliveries are gone. You are realistically looking at the next morning, unless a car is already parked at a nearby base and a driver is free.

Distance matters too. A delivery to Bondi is a different job to a delivery to Camden or the Central Coast. Traffic on the M4 at 5pm, the Harbour Tunnel at 6pm or Military Road at school pick-up adds an hour that nobody can get back.

One thing worth knowing: the fleet is booked online and cars are collected from Sydney bases or delivered. If you are reading this at the roadside, the fastest thing you can do is start the documentation while you wait for the tow truck. That is covered below.

The three things needed before a car is released

Every not-at-fault replacement vehicle, whether it is credit hire or an insurer hire car, needs three things before the keys change hands. Miss one and the car does not move.

  1. A version of events that points to the other driver. Not a police finding, not a court ruling. Just a clear, consistent account with the other driver's details and, ideally, their insurer.
  2. Your documents. Current driver licence, the registration of your damaged car, and proof of the incident. A photo of the other driver's licence and their insurer's name is worth more than a long story.
  3. A car that matches your own. Like-for-like means the replacement should be comparable in size, prestige and spec to what you were driving. If your car is a BMW M3, a base Corolla is not like-for-like.

If you are claiming through credit hire, the hire company also needs to know the at-fault insurer will be pursued for the cost. That is a commercial arrangement between the hire company and the insurer, not something you pay for up front.

If your own insurer is arranging the hire car under your policy, they need to accept the claim first. That is often the slowest of the three.

Proving the other driver was at fault quickly

Fault is the hinge the whole thing swings on. You do not need to prove it like a lawyer at the scene, but you do need enough that a hire company and an insurer can act on it.

At the scene, in this order:

  • Photograph both cars from four angles, plus the road, the lane markings and any give way or stop sign.
  • Photograph the other driver's licence, registration sticker or plate, and their insurer if they have it on a policy card.
  • Get names and phone numbers of any witnesses, including passengers in the other car if they saw what happened.
  • Note the time, the weather and the traffic conditions. A rear-end on the M5 at 8am in light rain reads very differently to a car park scrape.

If the other driver admits fault at the scene, get it in writing if you can, even a text message. If they will not admit it, do not argue. Collect and leave.

Rear-end collisions, most intersection collisions and most lane-change collisions are the easiest to establish. Car park incidents and roundabout disputes are the hardest, and those are the ones that most often push a same day delivery into the next day or the day after.

For a fuller checklist, see evidence to collect at the scene.

Delivery windows across the Sydney basin

Delivery is available across the Sydney basin, and the realistic window depends on where you are and when the car is released.

AreaTypical same day windowWhat can go wrong
Inner city, Eastern Suburbs, Lower North Shore3pm to 9pmClearance and cleaning between hires
Parramatta, Inner West, Hills District4pm to 9pmM4 traffic, especially westbound
Sutherland Shire, South West4pm to 9pmM5 and King Georges Road congestion
Northern Beaches5pm to 9pmMilitary Road and Spit Road
Central Coast, Blue MountainsUsually next dayDistance and driver availability

Two practical points. First, the delivery address can be your home, your workplace or the smash repairer, whichever is easiest. Second, if your car has been towed, tell the hire company where it went, because the tow yard address is often the best delivery point.

If you are on the M4 or M5 when it happens, there is specific guidance here: accident on the M4 or M5 motorway.

What to do if your car is towed to a holding yard

A towed car does not stop a same day replacement. It just changes the address you give.

When the tow truck arrives, ask three questions and write the answers down:

  1. Which yard is the car going to, and what is the yard's phone number?
  2. Is the tow a police tow or a private tow?
  3. What is the tow docket number?

Then photograph the car before it leaves, from every angle, including underneath if you can safely. Insurers and assessors will look for pre-existing damage, and a photo taken on the roadside is the best defence you have.

Take anything you need out of the car before it goes: toll tag, garage remote, child seats, phone charger, sunglasses, work gear. Getting them back from a holding yard in Western Sydney on a Saturday is a nuisance you do not need.

If the car is a write-off, the replacement question changes shape entirely. That is covered in repairs and write-offs, and the towing process itself is set out in towing after accident Sydney.

Cars that are usually ready at short notice

Short notice means a car that is already on the ground, clean and fuelled at a Sydney base. The three below are the sort of vehicles that move quickly because they suit a wide range of not-at-fault claims and are based in the metro area.

A large luxury SUV is the most common like-for-like replacement for a prestige daily driver, a family car or a tow vehicle. This one sits at Mascot, which is minutes from the airport and the Eastern Distributor, so it can be on the road to most of Sydney quickly.

If you were driving a performance sedan, a like-for-like replacement needs to be a performance sedan. Anything less and you are arguing about it later. This one is based at Parramatta, which suits the west and the Hills.

What happens if the insurer disputes liability later

This is the fear that stops people calling. It is worth understanding what actually happens.

With credit hire, the hire company takes on the risk of recovering the cost from the at-fault insurer. If liability is disputed later, that is a conversation between the hire company and the insurer, not a bill that lands on you mid-hire. That is the whole point of the arrangement, and it is why credit hire companies ask for a clear version of events up front.

What can change is the length of the hire. If the other insurer accepts fault, the hire usually runs until your car is repaired or written off and settled. If they dispute it, the hire company may set a shorter review point while the dispute is worked through.

If you are hiring through your own insurer under your policy, the position is different. Your insurer controls the hire and the duration, and a liability dispute can end the hire car earlier than you would like.

The comparison is set out in credit hire vs insurer hire car and how credit hire works. The general principle of like-for-like comes from the decision in Arsalan v Rixon, which is explained in like-for-like.

If you would rather compare the two routes side by side, start here: credit hire vs paying yourself.

How to prepare your documents before you call

This is the single biggest thing you control, and it is the difference between a car tonight and a car on Thursday.

Have these ready before you dial:

  • Your current driver licence, front and back.
  • The registration number and make of your damaged car.
  • A photo of the other driver's licence and their insurer, if you have it.
  • Photos of the damage and the scene.
  • The tow docket number and yard address, if the car has been towed.
  • The name and address of the smash repairer, if you have already chosen one.
  • Your best contact number and the delivery address, with a gate code or parking note if needed.

If you do not have the other driver's insurer yet, do not wait. Give what you have and update later. A missing insurer name slows things down, but a missing licence does not stop a car being reserved.

One more thing: if you are a fleet manager, the process is slightly different, and it is covered in business and fleet. If you are a smash repairer or solicitor who refers clients, see partners and referrals.

The wider picture of what happens in the first day and the first week is in first 24 hours vs first week.

Booking and who fulfils the hire

When you are ready to book, the process is online. You choose the car, enter your details and the delivery address, and the rate, the bond and any fees are shown on the car's page before you pay. The bond equals the excess you choose. Paying by card carries a small surcharge, while bank transfer and cash on the rental do not. Cars can be booked from a single day.

Bookings are fulfilled by Drive Tribe (drivetribe.com.au), and this site is part of that group. That is the entity that holds the car, delivers it and deals with the at-fault insurer on a credit hire file.

If you want to start now, the not-at-fault replacement page is here: not at fault accident replacement. If you would rather speak to someone first, use contact.

One honest note. Nobody can promise a car will be in your driveway tonight. What can be said is that if fault is clear, your documents are ready and a like-for-like car is free, same day is realistic across most of the Sydney basin. If any of those three is missing, you will usually be looking at the next day.

Questions people ask

How fast can a replacement car be delivered in Sydney?
If fault is clear, your documents are ready and a like-for-like car is free, delivery across most of the Sydney basin can happen the same day, often within a few hours. If you call before about 2pm, an afternoon or early evening delivery is realistic. After 5pm, the next morning is more likely. Distance matters: the Northern Beaches, the Shire and the Hills take longer than the inner suburbs, and traffic on the M4 and M5 at peak hour adds real time.
Can I get a replacement car on a weekend?
Yes, weekend deliveries happen, but the window is tighter and depends on driver availability and whether the car is already on the ground. Saturdays are usually workable if you call in the morning. Sundays are possible but slower, and public holidays are slower again. The thing that most often blocks a weekend delivery is not the fleet, it is a missing document or a tow yard that is closed, so get your paperwork sorted on Saturday morning if you can.
Do I need my insurer's approval before a replacement car is released?
Not if you are using credit hire. The hire company pursues the at-fault insurer for the cost, so your own insurer does not need to approve anything. If you are hiring through your own policy, then yes, your insurer must accept the claim and authorise the hire car first, and that is often the slowest step. If you are unsure which route suits you, ask before you book, because the two work very differently.
What if the other driver will not admit fault?
You can still get a replacement car, but same day becomes harder. Give the hire company everything you have: photos, witness names, the other driver's details and your own account. Rear-end and intersection collisions are usually straightforward even without an admission. Car park scrapes and roundabout disputes are the ones that drag. With credit hire, the liability argument is between the hire company and the at-fault insurer, not something you have to win yourself.
Can I get a replacement car if my car is a write-off?
Yes, but the process changes. A write-off usually means a longer hire while the claim is settled, and the like-for-like question becomes about what you were driving rather than what is being repaired. Tell the hire company early that the car may be written off, because it affects how the file is set up and how long the replacement is likely to stay with you. The repairs and write-offs page covers this in more detail.
What documents do I need ready before I call?
Your current driver licence, the registration of your damaged car, photos of the damage and the scene, the other driver's licence and insurer if you have them, and the tow docket number if the car has been towed. Have your delivery address and best contact number ready too. If you are missing the other driver's insurer, do not wait to call. Give what you have and update the file later.
