If you were hit on the Pacific Highway between Chatswood and Hornsby and the other driver was at fault, you can usually get a like-for-like replacement car through credit hire while yours is repaired, and the at-fault insurer pays the reasonable hire charge. The hire is arranged for you, you sign a credit hire agreement, and you drive something comparable until your car is back or the claim settles.

This page explains how that works in practice on the North Shore: what happens at the scene, how to pick a repairer, how the car reaches your driveway, what the insurer's first offer really means, and how long the whole thing tends to take.

Key takeaways

  • If the other driver was at fault, you can usually get a like-for-like replacement car through credit hire while yours is repaired.
  • The at-fault insurer pays the reasonable hire charge; you sign the credit hire agreement and the rate, bond and fees are shown before payment.
  • You choose your own repairer, and a prestige car needs a shop that does the brand's paint and sensor recalibration properly.
  • The insurer's first offer is an opening position, not a cap on your entitlement, and you do not have to accept it.
  • Same-day delivery is possible but depends on the right car being available, so ring before you drop your car at the shop.

The Pacific Highway crash profile

The Pacific Highway from Chatswood to Hornsby is a stop-start artery. Between the Mowbray Road lights at Chatswood and the Comenarra Parkway turn-off at Turramurra it is mostly two lanes each way with right-turn pockets that vanish at the worst moment. Southbound at Pymble in the 7.30am school run, traffic compresses hard between the Ryde Road and Mona Vale Road intersections. Northbound at Waitara in the 5pm peak, the queue for the Hornsby station turn backs up past the Edgeworth David Avenue lights.

That pattern produces one dominant crash type: the rear-ender. Someone checks a phone, a gap closes, and a prestige car takes a hit to the rear bumper, boot lid, parking sensors and sometimes the rear quarter. It is rarely a write-off. It is almost always a repair that needs a specialist panel shop, a paint match and a recalibration of the driver-assist sensors, which is why the car sits in the shop longer than the owner expects.

Two other spots come up again and again. The Pacific Highway at Roseville where the railway underpass narrows everything to a crawl, and the merge from the Hornsby bypass where the highway drops to a single lane before the Galston Road turn. Add wet mornings and low sun in winter and you have a road that punishes following distance.

If you drive a car that is worth repairing properly, the question after a hit like this is not whether you can get a hire car. It is whether you get one that matches what you were driving. That is what like-for-like means, and it is the part insurers push back on most.

What to do at the scene

Pull off the highway if you can. The Pacific Highway has few safe shoulders, so get onto a side street such as Help Street at Chatswood, Jersey Street at Hornsby or the service road behind the Waitara shops. Hazards on, engine off, and keep everyone out of the traffic lanes.

Then work through this in order:

  1. Call 000 if anyone is hurt. Otherwise call the police assistance line for a report number if the road is blocked or a driver leaves.
  2. Photograph everything before the cars move: both vehicles from four angles, the number plates, the damage close up, the road position, the traffic signals, the street sign.
  3. Swap details with the other driver: name, address, licence number, registration, insurer and policy number. Photograph their licence and rego sticker rather than writing it down.
  4. Note the time, the weather, the direction each car was travelling and any independent witness. Ask them to text you their name so you have a record.
  5. Do not discuss fault at the roadside. Be polite, exchange details, and leave the argument to the insurers.

If your car is drivable, drive it home or to a safe place. If it is not, arrange a tow to a repairer you choose, not one a tow truck operator recommends on the spot. The first 24 hours decide how smooth the rest of the claim goes, and there is a fuller checklist on our first 24 hours page.

Choosing a repairer on the North Shore

You are entitled to choose your own repairer. The at-fault insurer will often suggest one of its network shops because it is cheaper and faster for them, but a prestige car needs a shop that knows the brand: the correct paint system, the aluminium or carbon panels, the radar and camera recalibration behind the bumper.

North Shore options that come up regularly include the panel shops around Artarmon and St Leonards, the specialist shops at Thornleigh and Hornsby, and the prestige-focused workshops along the Pacific Highway at Pymble and Turramurra. The right choice depends on your car, not on the insurer's list.

Ask three questions before you commit:

  • Do you do the manufacturer's recalibration in-house, or do you sublet it?
  • What is your current booking lead time, and how long will my car actually be off the road?
  • Will you send the insurer a scope of works and deal with the assessor directly, or do I have to carry messages between you?

That last point matters more than people realise. A repairer who will talk to the assessor saves you weeks. If the insurer wants to send its own assessor, that is normal. It is the repairer's job to justify the scope, not yours. Our dealing with insurers page covers the back-and-forth in detail.

How a replacement car reaches you

Once you have a repairer and the claim is moving, the replacement car is arranged. Bookings are fulfilled by Drive Tribe (drivetribe.com.au), and this site is part of that group. You can see the accident replacement fleet at drivetribe.com.au/accident-replacement-car-sydney/.

The practical sequence on the North Shore usually looks like this:

  1. You confirm the repair booking and the likely drop-off date.
  2. The replacement car is matched to yours: size, badge, transmission and body style.
  3. Delivery is arranged to your home or the repairer, from Chatswood to Hornsby and out to the Berowra and Galston sides.
  4. You sign the credit hire agreement and a condition report, then the keys change hands.
  5. When your car is ready, the replacement is collected, often from the same place.

Same-day delivery is possible if you call early and the right car is available, but the honest answer is that it depends on what is on the fleet that day. A prestige car that matches a Porsche Macan or a BMW M3 is not sitting on every corner. If you need something specific, ring before you drop your car at the shop rather than after.

The insurer's first offer and what it really means

The at-fault insurer's first contact is usually a phone call within a day or two. It sounds helpful. Treat it as an opening position, not a final one.

Common lines you will hear:

  • "We can put you in a small hatch from our preferred supplier." That is not like-for-like if you were driving a performance SUV.
  • "We will only pay for a certain number of days." The insurer does not get to cap your entitlement at the outset; the hire is reasonable for as long as the repair reasonably takes.
  • "You should claim on your own insurance and we will sort it out later." That can cost you your excess and your no-claim bonus in the meantime.
  • "We do not deal with credit hire companies." They do not have to deal with anyone, but they remain liable for the reasonable cost of the replacement.

You do not have to accept the first offer. You do not have to use their repairer. You can say, politely, that you will arrange a like-for-like replacement and that your hire company will send the invoices to them. If they dispute it later, there is a process, and our common reasons an insurer disputes a hire car claim page sets out how those arguments are usually resolved.

What like-for-like looks like for a North Shore driver

Like-for-like does not mean the cheapest car that moves. It means a car of similar make, model, age, size and specification to the one you were driving, so your week is not disrupted. If your car is a performance SUV, a base hatchback is not a replacement; it is a downgrade.

On the North Shore the cars involved in these claims are typically German performance sedans, prestige SUVs and the occasional electric. A few examples from the fleet show the range:

Each of those is a different answer to a different car. The Macan GTS suits a performance SUV owner who needs five seats and all-wheel drive for the school run and the F3. The M3 Competition suits a performance sedan owner who wants the badge and the pace to match. The Model Y suits an electric SUV owner who does not want to spend a fortnight paying for petrol. Match the tier, not just the seat count.

There is more on how the tiers work on our replacement by car type page and on what like-for-like means in NSW.

How long repairs typically take

On the North Shore, a prestige repair is rarely quick. The panel shops around Artarmon, Pymble and Hornsby are busy, and a rear-end repair on a German car often needs parts from interstate or overseas.

As a rough guide, and it is only a guide:

Repair typeTypical time off the road
Bumper cover and paint3 to 7 days
Bumper, sensors and recalibration1 to 2 weeks
Boot, rear panel and paint match2 to 4 weeks
Structural or parts on backorder4 to 8 weeks or more

Two things stretch those numbers. The first is the insurer's assessor taking a week to approve the scope. The second is parts availability, which is out of everyone's hands. The replacement car stays with you for the reasonable repair period, not for a fixed number of days, which is why the hire agreement is written around the repair rather than a calendar. Our how long prestige repairs take in Sydney page goes deeper, and the credit hire timeline shows how the hire and the claim run side by side.

The paperwork in plain English

Credit hire paperwork looks intimidating. It is really four documents.

  • The credit hire agreement. You are hiring the car on credit. The at-fault insurer is expected to pay the reasonable hire charge. You are responsible if the claim fails for reasons within your control, such as giving inaccurate information.
  • The condition report. Photos and notes of the car's condition when you collect it. Walk around it and note every mark before you drive away.
  • The authority to act. This lets the hire company deal with the insurer and the repairer on your behalf.
  • The hire rate disclosure. The rate, the bond and every fee are shown on the car's page before payment. The bond equals the excess you choose. Paying by card carries a small surcharge; bank transfer and cash on the rental do not.

Read the agreement before you sign it, and ask what happens if the insurer disputes the claim. There is a fuller walk-through on our what you sign page and on credit hire costs and who pays what. If you would rather not use credit hire at all, claiming on your own insurance sets out the trade-offs.

When the other driver denies fault

Denials are common, especially in a rear-ender where the other driver claims you braked suddenly. The claim does not stop while fault is argued. The replacement car can still be arranged, and the hire company carries the risk of recovering the cost from the at-fault insurer.

What helps your position:

  • The police report number, if there is one.
  • Photos showing the impact points and the road layout.
  • Witness names and numbers, collected at the scene.
  • Any dashcam footage, downloaded the same day before it loops over.
  • A repairer's scope of works that ties the damage to the impact.

If the insurer formally disputes the hire, the matter usually moves to an internal review, then to the relevant dispute resolution process. Our when an insurer disputes a credit hire claim page and insurer disputes cover the steps. For a business fleet, the same logic applies but the paperwork runs through the fleet policy; see credit hire for business and fleet cars and business and fleet.

Questions people ask

Can I get a replacement car the same day?
Often, yes, if you call early and a matching car is on the fleet. On the North Shore the practical limit is the car, not the paperwork. A prestige SUV or performance sedan that matches yours may need to be brought from another base, which can push delivery to the next day. Ring before you drop your car at the repairer rather than after, and have your claim details and the repairer's address ready. If your car is not drivable, say so, because that changes the priority.
What if the other driver denies fault?
The claim still proceeds. Your replacement car can be arranged while fault is investigated, and the hire company carries the recovery risk. Gather the police report number if there is one, photos of both cars and the road, witness names and any dashcam footage downloaded the same day. A repairer's scope of works linking the damage to the impact helps. If the insurer formally disputes the hire, it moves to internal review and then the relevant dispute process.
Do I pay anything upfront?
Under credit hire, no hire charge is payable upfront. The rate, the bond and every fee are shown on the car's page before payment. The bond equals the excess you choose, and paying by card carries a small surcharge while bank transfer and cash on the rental do not. If the claim fails for reasons within your control, such as giving inaccurate information, you can become responsible for the hire charge, so read the agreement before you sign.
How long can I keep the replacement car?
For the reasonable repair period, not a fixed number of days. On the North Shore a bumper and paint job might be a week, while a rear panel repair with parts on backorder can run four to eight weeks. The hire runs alongside the repair, and the at-fault insurer is expected to pay the reasonable hire charge for that period. If the repair is delayed by the insurer's assessor or by parts, that time is generally still covered.
What if my car is written off?
The replacement car does not simply stop the moment the insurer declares a write-off. The hire usually continues for a short period while the payout is settled and you source a replacement, because you still need to get to work. The rules change slightly, and our credit hire and write-offs page explains what shifts. Tell the hire company as soon as you hear the car is a write-off so the timing is managed properly.
Can I use my own repairer on the Pacific Highway?
Yes. You are entitled to choose your own repairer, and the at-fault insurer cannot force you onto its network. Pick a shop that knows your brand, does the paint match and the radar and camera recalibration in-house, and will deal with the assessor directly. The shops around Artarmon, Pymble, Thornleigh and Hornsby are the usual North Shore choices. Ask about their current lead time before you book, because that drives how long you keep the replacement car.
