Crash on the Spit Road or Roseville Bridge: what next

If you have just been hit on Spit Road, the Roseville Bridge or Military Road and you were not at fault, you are entitled to be put back in a comparable car while yours is repaired or written off. That replacement can be delivered to Manly, Mosman, Dee Why or Narrabeen, often the same day.
This guide covers the choke points on the Northern Beaches corridor, how towing works when the road is narrow, what evidence matters, and how a like-for-like replacement is arranged without you paying the hire cost out of your own pocket.
Key takeaways
- If you were not at fault in a crash on Spit Road, Roseville Bridge or Military Road, you can recover the reasonable cost of a like-for-like replacement car while yours is repaired.
- Towing on this corridor is tight, so insist on a flatbed for any AWD prestige car and tell the operator which repairer you want.
- Delivery of a replacement car is available to Manly, Mosman, Dee Why, Narrabeen and surrounding suburbs, often the same day.
- Bus lane cameras, dashcams and shop CCTV are the strongest evidence on Military Road and Spit Road, so collect it early.
- The rate, bond and fees are shown on the car's page before payment, and the bond equals the excess you choose.

Why this corridor produces so many rear enders
The Northern Beaches corridor is a funnel. Tens of thousands of cars squeeze through a handful of pinch points every morning, and the road design makes low-speed rear enders almost inevitable. On Spit Road the lanes narrow as you approach the bridge, the merge from Parriwi Road catches drivers who leave it late, and the traffic light at the Spit West car park creates a stop-start queue that ripples back past Pearl Bay. On the Roseville Bridge approaches the lanes drop from three to two and the curve hides brake lights until you are close. On Military Road the tram tracks, bus lane and frequent kerbside stops mean the car in front can stop without warning.
Most crashes here are not dramatic. They are a bumper into a bumper at 20 to 40 km/h, which is exactly the kind of impact that damages a prestige car's sensors, radar, cameras and parking aids even when the panel damage looks minor. A Range Rover Sport or Porsche Macan can look almost untouched and still need a recalibration that takes days.
If you are not at fault, the law in NSW is on your side. The High Court decision in Arsalan v Rixon confirmed that a not-at-fault driver can recover the reasonable cost of a replacement vehicle for the period their own car is off the road. You can read the full explanation in our guide to Arsalan v Rixon.
Spit Road and the spit bridge bottleneck
Spit Road runs from the Spit Bridge at Mosman up through Seaforth and Balgowlah. The bridge itself opens on a schedule, and when it does the queue on both sides can stretch back past the Manly Road turnoff. The most common crash spots are the southbound approach where the two lanes merge before the bridge, the northbound exit where cars accelerate away and then brake for the Spit West car park lights, and the intersection with Sydney Road where turning traffic crosses the through lanes.
If you are hit here, the first practical problem is where to stop. There is almost no shoulder on the bridge itself, so if the cars are drivable you should move them off the bridge to the nearest side street or car park. The Spit West car park and the row of shops on Spit Road at Seaforth are the usual places to exchange details. If the cars cannot move, call 000 if anyone is hurt, then the police non-emergency line, and put your hazard lights on immediately.
Traffic on this road is heavy in both directions from 7am to 9.30am and again from 3.30pm to 6.30pm. A crash at 8am on a Tuesday will be seen by hundreds of drivers, which is useful for witnesses but also means the tow truck will struggle to reach you. Ask for a tow to a repairer you choose, not the first one that arrives.

Age limits are set per car. Drivers under 25 can hire most cars with Young Driver Cover; the exact terms are shown before you pay.
Roseville Bridge and the Wakehurst Parkway
The Roseville Bridge carries Warringah Road over Middle Harbour between Roseville and Forestville. The crash pattern here is different from the Spit. The long downhill approach from the east, the curve at the bridge deck and the merge with the Wakehurst Parkway create speed differentials that catch people out. Rear enders are common on the eastbound approach in the wet, and side swipes are common where drivers change lanes late for the Parkway turnoff.
The Wakehurst Parkway itself is a notorious black spot, especially between Narrabeen and Frenchs Forest. It is a single carriageway with a 70 km/h limit that many drivers treat as a suggestion, and it floods after heavy rain. If you are hit on the Parkway, the road is narrow enough that you should try to get both cars onto the gravel shoulder or into a driveway before exchanging details.
For a prestige car, the repairer matters as much as the tow. A BMW M or AMG that needs panel work and sensor recalibration should go to a shop that has the diagnostic equipment and the manufacturer approvals. If you are unsure where to send it, our guide to BMW M and AMG replacement cars explains how like-for-like works for performance models.
Not at fault? Start your claim
A like-for-like replacement car while yours is repaired. No cost to you when the other driver is at fault.
Start my claimMilitary Road and the tram tracks
Military Road runs through Neutral Bay, Cremorne and Mosman, and it is one of the busiest bus corridors in Sydney. The old tram tracks are still embedded in the road surface, and in the wet they offer almost no grip. A rear ender on Military Road often happens when the car in front brakes for a bus pulling out, or when a driver loses traction on the steel rails while changing lanes.
The bus lane runs for much of the road and is camera-monitored. If you are hit while in the general traffic lanes, the bus lane cameras and the bus-mounted cameras may have captured the incident. That footage can be requested, but it is not automatic and the process takes time. Our section on evidence below explains how to ask.
Military Road is also where a lot of minor crashes turn into disputes, because the traffic is slow and the damage can be hard to see. Take photos of everything: the position of the cars, the lane markings, the tram tracks, the bus stop, the street signs. If the other driver admits fault, get it in writing or on a voice recording if you can do so safely. If they will not, do not argue. Exchange details and let the insurers and the evidence sort it out.
When your car is off the road, the replacement should match what you were driving. A luxury SUV owner should not be put into a small hatchback. The principle is called like-for-like, and it is the standard the courts apply.
Towing from a narrow corridor
Towing on the Northern Beaches corridor is not like towing on the M4. The roads are narrow, the shoulders are short and the traffic is relentless. A flatbed is almost always the right choice for a prestige car, because it keeps all four wheels off the ground and avoids drivetrain damage on an AWD vehicle. If you drive a Range Rover Sport, a Porsche Macan or a Tesla Model X, insist on a flatbed.
Here is what to do in order:
- Make sure everyone is safe and call 000 if anyone is injured.
- Turn on hazard lights and, if you can, move the cars to the nearest side street, car park or driveway.
- Call the police non-emergency line if the road is blocked or a driver has left the scene.
- Take photos before anything is moved if it is safe to do so.
- Exchange names, phone numbers, licence details, registration numbers and insurer names.
- Call your insurer and, if you are not at fault, a replacement car provider.
- Tell the tow operator where you want the car taken. You choose the repairer.
Do not let a tow truck driver talk you into a repairer you have never heard of. You are entitled to choose. If the car is undrivable, the tow is part of your claim and the at-fault driver's insurer should cover it. Keep the receipt.

Delivery to Manly, Mosman, Dee Why or Narrabeen
A replacement car is not much use if you have to catch two buses to Mascot to collect it. Delivery is available across the Northern Beaches and the lower north shore, including Manly, Mosman, Neutral Bay, Cremorne, Balgowlah, Dee Why, Narrabeen and Mona Vale. In most cases the car can be brought to your home, your workplace or the repairer, and the paperwork done on the spot.
Bookings are fulfilled by Drive Tribe (drivetribe.com.au), the trading name of Australian Business Holdings Pty Ltd, and this site is part of that group. You can see the accident replacement options and start a booking at accident replacement car Sydney. The rate, the bond and any fees are shown on the car's page before you pay. The bond equals the excess you choose, and paying by card carries a small surcharge while bank transfer and cash on the rental do not.
Delivery windows on the Northern Beaches are usually morning or early afternoon. If you are in Manly, the driver can meet you in the Whistler Street car park or on the quiet side of Sydney Road. In Mosman, a common meeting point is the car park off Vista Street or the Spit Road shops. In Dee Why, the Howard Avenue car park works well. In Narrabeen, the car park near the lake is easy for a flatbed and a delivery vehicle.

Evidence that helps on this road
On a corridor this busy, evidence is usually plentiful. The trick is to collect it before it disappears. Here is what to gather in the first hour:
- Photos of both cars from every angle, including close-ups of the damage and the number plates.
- Photos of the road surface, lane markings, give-way signs, traffic lights and the tram tracks if you are on Military Road.
- A photo of the other driver's licence and registration sticker.
- Names and phone numbers of any witnesses. On Spit Road and Military Road there will be pedestrians and bus passengers.
- Dashcam footage. Download it to your phone before the card loops over.
- Bus lane camera footage, if the crash happened near a bus lane. You or your insurer can request it from the transport authority, but do it early.
- Any CCTV from nearby shops, servos or car parks. The Spit West car park, the shops on Spit Road and the service stations on Military Road are common sources.
If the other driver disputes fault, the evidence decides the claim. Our guide to proving the other driver was at fault sets out what insurers look for. In a rear ender, the driver behind is presumed at fault unless they can show a reason, such as a sudden brake check or a third car pushing them. That presumption is why dashcam footage matters so much on this road.
Same day replacement options
Same day delivery is possible on the Northern Beaches if you call early and the car you need is available. The process is straightforward. You lodge the claim, the other driver's insurer accepts fault or you proceed under credit hire, and a replacement car is delivered. You do not pay the hire cost upfront if the claim is accepted or if you use a credit hire arrangement. Our guide to how credit hire works explains the mechanics.
What you can expect to drive depends on what you were driving. A luxury SUV owner should get a luxury SUV. A performance car owner should get a performance car. The fleet includes vehicles such as the Range Rover Sport 2022, which is a five-seat AWD SUV with 294 kW and a minimum driver age of 20.

All of these are self-drive and available with delivery. The rate, bond and fees are shown on each car's page before payment. If you are a fleet manager or a repairer looking to set up a referral arrangement, see accident replacement vehicles or our partners and referrals page.
One more thing: keep the replacement car for as long as your car is genuinely off the road. The hire period should match the repair period, not longer. If the repair is delayed because parts are on back order, that is usually still recoverable, but keep the paperwork tidy. Our guide to how long prestige car repairs take in Sydney gives realistic timeframes.
What to do in the first 24 hours
The first day sets up the whole claim. Here is the short version.
- Report the crash to the police if anyone was injured, if a driver left the scene, or if the road was blocked. Get the event number.
- Call your own insurer to notify them, even if you are not at fault. You are usually required to tell them.
- Call the at-fault driver's insurer if you have their details. If they will not accept fault, do not argue. Move to the next step.
- Arrange a replacement car. If you are not at fault, you should not be paying for it. See what you never pay when not at fault.
- Choose your repairer and tell the tow operator where to take the car.
- Keep a folder, digital or paper, with every photo, receipt, email and phone note.
If the other insurer tries to put you in a small car or tells you to wait, you can push back. The test is reasonableness, and our guide to the reasonable hire car test explains how it is applied. If you are dealing with a difficult insurer, our dealing with insurers page has the escalation steps.
If your car is written off, the replacement car question changes. You are still entitled to be back on the road, but the claim becomes about the value of your car plus loss of use. See repairs and write-offs for how that works.
Finally, if you are not sure whether you were at fault, read what not at fault means in NSW. The answer is not always obvious at the scene, and it is worth getting right before you sign anything.
