Ute replacement after an accident in Sydney: getting a working ute back the same day

If your ute is off the road after a crash that was not your fault, you can get a like-for-like replacement ute, often delivered to your site or yard the same day, and the at-fault party's insurer normally picks up the reasonable cost. This page explains how that works in New South Wales for tradies and site managers who need a working vehicle, not a base rental.
We cover matching your HiLux, Ranger, Shark or Silverado, trays, towing, tools, loss of income and what to do when the other insurer drags its feet. Bookings are fulfilled by Drive Tribe (drivetribe.com.au), the trading name of Australian Business Holdings Pty Ltd, and this site is part of that group.

Why a base rental ute will not get you back on site
A base rental ute is a vehicle someone else has finished with. It has a scratched tray, a tow ball rated for a box trailer, all-terrain tyres that are half worn, and a cabin that smells like a previous renter's dog. You cannot put a 900 kg pallet of tiles on it, you cannot tow the bobcat, and you cannot leave your tools in it overnight without worrying.
More importantly, it is not like-for-like. If your working ute is a HiLux SR5 with a steel tray, a canopy and a 3,500 kg tow rating, a base 2WD single-cab with a drop-side tray is not a replacement. It is a downgrade. Under the principle in Arsalan v Rixon [2021] HCA 19, a person who has been wrongfully deprived of their vehicle can recover the reasonable cost of a substitute, and the substitute should be broadly equivalent to what was lost.
That does not mean you automatically get a brand new ute. It means the replacement should let you do the same work: same payload, same towing capacity, same tray type, same drivetrain for the sites you actually drive to. If you are on a Badgerys Creek civil job or a Chatswood apartment fit-out, a 2WD ute with a low tray is a problem, not a solution.
If your ute is a lifestyle model, a Wildtrak or a Rogue, the position is even clearer. You are paying for a 4x4 dual cab with a decent tray and a real tow rating. A base rental does not match it. See like-for-like for how we assess this.
HiLux, Ranger, Shark and Silverado: matching your working ute
We match on what the ute does, not just what badge is on the tailgate. The fleet includes several utes that suit tradies and site managers, and the right one depends on your trade, your tray and your towing.
If you drive a HiLux SR5 or Rogue, a Toyota HiLux Rogue 4x4 is the natural match. It is a dual cab 4x4 diesel with a 500 Nm torque figure, which is what you want for a loaded tray or a trailer on the M4 at 6am. It seats five, so the crew comes with you. Minimum driver age is 25.
If your ute is a Ranger Wildtrak, the Ford Ranger Wildtrak 4x4 2022 is the closest thing in the fleet. Same dual cab 4x4 diesel layout, 500 Nm, five seats, and a tray that takes a standard canopy or a tradesman's rack. Minimum age 25.
If you have moved to a Shark 6, the BYD Shark 6 Premium 2026 is a plug-in hybrid AWD with 321 kW and 650 Nm, so it tows and carries without the diesel clatter. It is also the only ute here with a minimum driver age of 20, which matters if your apprentice or leading hand needs to drive it.
If you run a full-size American ute, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss 2022 is the match. Petrol V8, 313 kW, 624 Nm, 4WD, five seats, and it can be self-drive or chauffeured. Minimum age 25.
All four are based at Merrylands and delivery is available across Sydney. If you need to book one now, start at accident replacement car Sydney.

Age limits are set per car. Drivers under 25 can hire most cars with Young Driver Cover; the exact terms are shown before you pay.
Towing, trays and carrying tools
Towing is the first question every tradie asks, and it is the right question. The replacement ute needs a tow ball, a wiring loom that works, and a rating that covers what you actually tow. A box trailer with a lawn mower is one thing. A 3.5 tonne plant trailer is another.
Tell us at the time of booking what you tow. If you need a brake controller, say so. If your trailer has a seven-pin round plug and the ute has a flat plug, that is a five-minute fix at the yard, not a reason to lose a day.
Trays are the second question. There are three common setups:
- Steel tray with drop sides, for sand, soil, tiles and general building material.
- Alloy tray with a canopy, for tools and lockable storage.
- Tub with a hard lid, for lifestyle utes and mixed use.
We cannot promise a specific tray on a specific day, because it depends on what is available, but we will tell you what the replacement has before you accept it. If the tray does not work for your job, say so early. It is much easier to swap before delivery than after.
Tools are the third question. A replacement ute is not your ute. It will not have your drawers, your rack, your UHF or your trade signage. If you need a ladder rack for a job at Macquarie Park, tell us and we will see what can be arranged. Do not assume.
If your ute is a 4WD and you work on sites with unsealed access, like the back of a Kemps Creek estate, confirm the replacement is 4WD. All four utes listed here are 4WD or AWD.
Not at fault? Start your claim
A like-for-like replacement car while yours is repaired. No cost to you when the other driver is at fault.
Start my claimSame-day delivery to site or the yard
Most of the value of a replacement ute is in the first day. If your ute is towed from the M5 at Padstow at 7am, you have lost the morning. You do not want to lose the week.
Delivery is available across Sydney. In practice, same-day delivery works best when three things are true:
- The crash is reported and the other driver's details are captured.
- You have a delivery address that a car carrier can access, such as a yard, a site office or a depot.
- You have your licence and a card or bank transfer ready for the hire agreement.
If your ute is at a holding yard in Blacktown or a smash repairer in Alexandria, we can often deliver the replacement there and collect the damaged one at the same time. That saves you a trip.
Site delivery needs a bit of planning. A car carrier cannot get into a tight basement at Rhodes or a residential street in Strathfield during school pickup. If you are on a major site, give the gate address and the site contact. If you are at a yard in Wetherill Park, it is straightforward.
Bookings are fulfilled by Drive Tribe (drivetribe.com.au), the trading name of Australian Business Holdings Pty Ltd, and this site is part of that group. The rate, the bond and every fee are shown on the car's page before payment. Paying by card carries a small surcharge; bank transfer and cash on the rental do not. Cars can be booked from a single day.
What to do with your tools after the crash
Tools are the quiet problem in every ute crash. If your ute is towed, your tools go with it. If your tools are in the tray and it is raining, you have a bigger problem.
At the scene, before the tow truck leaves, do three things:
- Photograph the loaded tray, the toolboxes, the drawers and the rack. This is evidence of what was in the vehicle and how it was secured.
- Take anything small and valuable with you: hand tools, meters, laptops, radios. Do not leave them in a vehicle going to a holding yard.
- Ask the tow operator where the vehicle is going and get the yard's name and address in writing, by text if possible.
If your tools are damaged in the crash, that is part of your claim. Keep the damaged items, photograph them, and get a replacement quote. Do not throw them out.
If your tools are locked in the ute at a holding yard, you can usually arrange access, but it takes time. It is much easier to empty the vehicle before it leaves the scene. If you cannot, call the yard first thing the next morning and ask what their access hours are. Some yards at Eastern Creek and Villawood only release property on weekdays.
For the full sequence, see first 24 hours and evidence to collect at the scene.

Loss of income and the replacement ute
If you are a sole trader or a subcontractor, a ute off the road is lost income. You cannot invoice for a job you cannot get to. If you are a site manager, it is lost time and a lot of phone calls.
Can you claim loss of income? In New South Wales, a person who has suffered loss because of another driver's negligence can claim damages, and that can include economic loss. Whether it applies to you depends on your circumstances, your records and how the claim is run. This is general information, not personal advice. Talk to your solicitor or accountant about your situation.
What helps a loss of income claim:
- Invoices and job sheets showing what you could not do.
- Your diary or booking system showing the jobs that were cancelled or moved.
- Subcontractor costs if you had to pay someone else to cover the work.
- Hire records showing the replacement ute and the days it was needed.
The replacement ute itself is usually claimed as the cost of a substitute vehicle, not as loss of income. Keeping the two separate makes the claim cleaner.
If you run a fleet, the calculation is different. A ute off the road can mean a crew standing around. See business and fleet and accident replacement vehicles for business and fleet owners.

The hire agreement for a business vehicle
A replacement ute for a business is still a hire vehicle, and the paperwork is the same as any other rental. The difference is who signs and who pays.
If the ute is in the business name, the business signs the hire agreement. If it is in your personal name but used for work, you sign personally. Either way, the driver must meet the minimum age for that vehicle and hold the right licence.
The key terms to understand:
- The bond equals the excess you choose. It is not a fee and it is not lost if you do not have an at-fault incident.
- Paying by card carries a small surcharge. Bank transfer and cash on the rental do not.
- The rate, the bond and every fee are shown on the car's page before payment.
- Cars can be booked from a single day, so you are not locked into a week you do not need.
If you are a fleet manager, set up the account before you need it. A crash at 6am on the M7 is not the time to be collecting company details. Have the ABN, the insurer details, the driver's licence and a payment method ready.
If you are a smash repairer or a solicitor looking for a referral partner, see partners and referrals and business and fleet.
If the at-fault insurer delays
The at-fault insurer will usually accept the claim, but acceptance and payment are different things. You can be waiting weeks for a decision while your ute sits at a repairer.
What to do while you wait:
- Keep driving the replacement ute if it has been provided under a credit hire arrangement. The cost is recovered from the at-fault insurer later.
- Keep records of every call, email and reference number.
- Do not accept a cash settlement for the vehicle before you understand what it covers.
- If the insurer is slow, ask for the claim reference and the assessor's name, and put your request in writing.
Credit hire is the mechanism that lets you get a replacement ute now and let the insurer sort out the cost later. It is not free money; it is a hire agreement where the cost is recovered from the at-fault party. See how credit hire works and insurer delays.
If your ute is a write-off, the replacement question changes. You may be entitled to a substitute while you wait for the payout and while you source a new vehicle. See repairs and write-offs.

What a working ute replacement looks like in practice
A tiler on a job at Rouse Hill loses his HiLux SR5 on a Thursday morning when a P-plater runs a red on Windsor Road. By 2pm the same day, a HiLux Rogue 4x4 is at the site, the damaged ute is on its way to a repairer at Castle Hill, and the tiler is back on the tools on Friday. That is the standard we aim for.
A site manager running a Ranger Wildtrak for a project at Badgerys Creek has a different problem. The ute is the site vehicle. It carries the plans, the survey gear and the safety kit. A base rental ute with a tub and no canopy is not going to work. The Wildtrak replacement needs a canopy or a lockable tray, and it needs to be 4WD for the unsealed access.
A sparky with a Shark 6 who works around the inner west needs a ute that fits in tight streets at Leichhardt and Annandale and can still tow a trailer to a job at Sydney Olympic Park. The Shark 6 Premium is AWD with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, so it does both.
A concreter with a Silverado 1500 Trail Boss needs a full-size ute for the tray and the towing. That is a specific vehicle, and it needs to be matched specifically.
The common thread is that the replacement has to do the job. That is what like-for-like means in practice. For the general principle, see like-for-like replacement car meaning NSW and ute and 4WD replacement after crash.
If you are not at fault, the process is simpler than you think
If the crash was not your fault, you have options that do not involve waiting for the other insurer to approve anything. You can arrange a replacement ute, keep working, and let the claim run in the background.
The steps are straightforward:
- Report the crash to police if anyone was injured or the damage is significant.
- Exchange details and photograph everything.
- Call us and tell us what you drive, what you tow and where you need the replacement delivered.
- Sign the hire agreement and take delivery.
- Keep working while the claim is sorted.
