Credit hire after a crash on the M4 at Granville

Genesis GV80 photo 1
Genesis GV80 photo 1

If you were hit on the M4 at Granville and it was not your fault, you can usually keep driving a car of the same standard while yours is repaired, and the at-fault insurer pays for it through credit hire. The claim usually turns on lane position at the merge, so what you record in the first ten minutes matters more than what you remember a week later.

This is the plain-English version for drivers of prestige and performance cars: the Granville stretch, the merge points, the tow, the two insurers, and how a replacement car gets to your driveway in Granville or Parramatta.

Key takeaways

  • A merge crash on the M4 at Granville is not automatically the merging driver's fault; lane position and dashcam footage decide most disputes.
  • Photograph the lane markings, both cars in position, and the other driver's details before the tow truck arrives.
  • Cars towed from the M4 at Granville usually go to holding yards around Clyde, Auburn or Guildford, so get the yard name and the tow docket.
  • A like-for-like replacement car can usually be delivered to Granville or Parramatta the same day if the claim is accepted in the morning.
  • The hire runs while the repair runs, and the at-fault insurer pays at the end, not you.

The Granville stretch and its merge points

Granville sits where the M4 Motorway, Parramatta Road, Woodville Road and the rail corridor all squeeze into the same square kilometre. The M4 is three lanes each way through here, and the trouble spots are predictable.

Eastbound, the Woodville Road on-ramp at Granville feeds into the left lane just before the Duck River bridge, and the lane ends soon after. Drivers already on the motorway drift right to avoid the merge; drivers coming down the ramp accelerate hard to find a gap. That is the classic Granville contact point.

Westbound, the Church Street and Parramatta Road entries near the Granville exit create a second pinch. At 7.45am and again at 4.50pm, the queue from the M4 back onto Woodville Road is long enough that drivers cut across the painted chevron to get in. That is where a lot of sideswipes start.

The M4 at Granville is also a heavy vehicle route. B-doubles and concrete trucks run the left lane, and their blind spots at the merge are real. If you are in a low car, a truck changing lanes onto you is a different claim to a car changing lanes onto you, and the evidence you need is the same either way: position, indication, and who crossed the line.

Two things make Granville claims harder than a crash at, say, Homebush. First, the merge is a zipper, so both drivers often believe they had right of way. Second, the on-ramps are short, so speed differentials are high and damage is rarely cosmetic. If your car is a prestige or performance model, that difference in repair cost is exactly why you want a like-for-like replacement rather than a small hatch.

On-ramp and merge collisions: who is at fault

There is no rule that the merging driver is always at fault. In New South Wales, fault at a merge is decided on the evidence, and the two questions that decide most Granville claims are: who was established in the lane, and who crossed the line.

A driver already in a marked lane has the right of way over a driver entering from an on-ramp. But that is not the end of it. If the driver in the lane changed lanes into the merging vehicle, or sped up to close a gap, the fault can shift or be shared. Insurers settle a large share of merge crashes on a split, often 50/50, when the stories conflict and neither side has footage.

What actually moves the needle:

  • Dashcam footage. A single clip showing the lane markings and the moment of contact usually ends the argument.
  • Position of damage. Damage to your front left quarter versus their rear right door tells a story about who was ahead.
  • Witnesses. At Granville, the best witnesses are often the drivers behind you. Get a name and number at the scene, not later.
  • Police attendance. For a tow, an injury or a blocked lane, call the police. The event number is useful to both insurers.

If liability is disputed, that does not automatically stop your replacement car. A credit hire provider assesses the claim on its own merits and can fund the hire while the insurers argue. That is the whole point of the arrangement. Read not at fault explained for how the assessment works, and what not at fault means in NSW for the statutory background.

One caution: do not admit fault at the roadside to be polite. "Sorry mate" has been used against drivers in statements. Exchange details, photograph everything, and let the evidence decide.

What to photograph before the tow arrives

Once the tow truck is called, you have a window of maybe ten to twenty minutes. Use it properly. The photos you take at Granville will be the backbone of the liability file.

  1. Stand back and take wide shots of both cars in the lane, showing the lane markings, the on-ramp and the direction of travel. Get the chevron or the lane line in frame.
  2. Take close shots of the contact damage on both vehicles, from two angles each.
  3. Photograph the other driver's number plate, registration sticker and the make and model. If it is a company vehicle, photograph the signage.
  4. Photograph the other driver's licence and their insurer details if they will show you. If they will not, note that.
  5. Photograph the road surface, skid marks, debris and any fluid. Fluid tells the tow operator what not to drag.
  6. Photograph the time on your phone screen next to the scene, or just note the time. Traffic camera footage is often overwritten within days.

If your car has a factory dashcam or a third-party one, check it is recording before the ignition is switched off. Some systems stop writing when the car loses power. If you can, pull the card and keep it.

Then call your insurer, and if you intend to claim through the at-fault side, call a credit hire provider before you sign anything from the tow company. Tow operators at Granville are busy and some will ask you to authorise storage. Storage fees can become a fight later. If the car is being taken to a holding yard, ask which one and get it in writing.

Where cars are towed from the M4 at Granville

Tow allocation on the M4 is managed through the motorway operator, and cars are usually moved to a holding yard rather than straight to a repairer. From Granville, the common destinations are yards around Clyde, Auburn, Guildford and sometimes further west towards Prospect. If you are eastbound and the car is not driveable, it may go to a yard near Silverwater or Rydalmere.

What matters to you:

  • Get the yard name and address before the truck leaves. Photograph the tow truck and its plate.
  • Ask for the tow docket. You are entitled to a copy as the owner.
  • Do not let the car sit in a holding yard for a week. Storage accrues daily and an insurer will question it.
  • Nominate your own repairer early. You have the right to choose who repairs your car, and for a prestige or performance model that choice matters.

If the car is driveable but unsafe, say so. A car with a cracked wheel or a leaking radiator should not be driven from Granville to Parramatta. The tow is cheaper than the engine.

Once the car is at a repairer, the assessment starts. If you want a replacement car while that happens, the booking is straightforward and can be arranged the same day in most cases. Bookings are fulfilled by Drive Tribe (drivetribe.com.au), the trading name of Australian Business Holdings Pty Ltd, and this site is part of that group. You can see how the not-at-fault process works at not at fault in a car accident in NSW.

If your car is a total loss rather than a repairable, the rules change. See credit hire and write-offs.

Replacement car delivery to Granville and Parramatta

Granville is well served for delivery. Cars can be brought to your home, your workplace, or the repairer, and handed over with the paperwork on the spot. If you are in Granville, South Granville, Clyde, Harris Park, Rosehill or Parramatta, delivery is usually the same day if the claim is accepted in the morning.

What to expect at handover:

  • The car is matched to yours as closely as possible. Like-for-like does not mean identical, it means comparable in size, transmission, seating and standing. Read like-for-like for how that is assessed.
  • You will sign a credit hire agreement. Read it. It sets out who pays if the claim succeeds and what happens if it does not. See what you sign.
  • You will need your licence, and a card for the bond. The bond equals the excess you choose, and paying by card carries a small surcharge while bank transfer and cash on the rental do not.
  • Minimum driver age is 20 on most cars and 25 or 30 on some.

If your car is a large SUV, a seven-seat family car, or a performance sedan, the replacement should be in the same bracket. Three cars that suit Granville claims well:

For a prestige SUV owner, a Genesis GV80 is a natural fit: seven seats, all-wheel drive, and enough presence for the school run and the M4 commute.

How a not-at-fault replacement runs
AccidentClaim lodgedCar deliveredYour car repairedHire recovered from the at-fault insurer

Dealing with two insurers and one dispute

In a not-at-fault claim, there are usually two insurers in the room: yours and the at-fault driver's. Your own insurer handles your repairs if you claim on your policy, but then you may pay your excess and lose your no-claim bonus until the money is recovered. The at-fault insurer handles the liability and, eventually, the hire.

Credit hire exists to avoid that. You claim through the at-fault side, the hire is funded while the claim is resolved, and your own policy is left alone. The at-fault insurer pays the hire at the end. If they dispute it, the dispute is between the credit hire provider and that insurer, not you.

What you should still do:

  • Report the crash to your own insurer as soon as practical. Most policies require notification even if you are not claiming.
  • Do not accept a settlement offer for your repairs before you understand what you are signing. Once you accept, the repair path is set.
  • Keep every text, email and letter. If the other driver's insurer calls you, take the reference and the name, and tell them you have a credit hire provider handling the replacement car.
  • If the insurer denies liability, the hire does not automatically stop. The provider reviews the evidence. See when an insurer disputes a credit hire claim and insurer disputes hire car claim.

The single best thing you can do is give the provider your dashcam footage and photos the same day. Disputes are won on evidence, not on who calls first.

How long repairs take when parts come from interstate

Sydney prestige repairs are rarely delayed by the panel shop. They are delayed by parts. If your car is a European performance model, or a low-volume variant, the part may come from a Sydney warehouse, a Melbourne depot, or the factory. That changes the timeline.

Part sourceTypical waitWhat it means for your hire
Sydney warehouseA few daysRepair in weeks, not months
Interstate depotOne to three weeksHire continues while you wait
Overseas orderFour weeks or moreHire continues, but expect insurer questions

The hire runs while the repair runs, provided the delay is reasonable and not caused by you. If the repairer is waiting on a part, that is not your delay. If you have not authorised the repair, that is. Keep the repairer's updates and forward them to the credit hire provider. See how long prestige car repairs take in Sydney.

One practical point for Granville drivers: if the repairer is west of you, in Auburn, Smithfield or Blacktown, ask whether the replacement car can be swapped at the repairer when yours is ready. It saves a trip.

Handing the car back once yours is ready

The hire ends when your car is repaired and available to collect, not when you feel like returning it. That distinction matters, because insurers watch the return date. If your car is ready on a Tuesday and you return the replacement on Friday, the last three days may be questioned.

The clean handover:

  • Confirm with the repairer that the car is finished and ready for pickup.
  • Book the return for the same day or the next.
  • Refuel to the level it was supplied at, and keep the receipt.
  • Photograph the car inside and out before handover, including the odometer.
  • Get a return receipt or email confirmation.

If the repair is delayed again, tell the provider before the expected return date, not after. Extensions are routine when the repairer is waiting on a part. Extensions after the fact are harder.

Once the car is back, the credit hire provider and the at-fault insurer settle the hire account. You are not part of that negotiation unless you are asked to provide evidence. For the full sequence, see credit hire timeline from crash to settlement.

If you run a business and the car is a fleet vehicle, the same process applies, but the paperwork is different. See credit hire for business and fleet cars and how long you can keep a not-at-fault replacement car in NSW.

What to do in the first hour at Granville

Granville is a busy interchange with a lot of through traffic, and the first hour sets up the claim. Here is the sequence that works.

  1. Check for injuries. Call 000 if anyone is hurt.
  2. Move to a safe spot if the cars can move. If not, put hazards on and stay in the car with belts on if traffic is passing close.
  3. Call the police if there is a tow, an injury, or a lane is blocked. Get the event number.
  4. Exchange details: name, address, licence, registration, insurer, phone.
  5. Photograph everything as set out above.
  6. Call your insurer to notify, and call a credit hire provider if you intend to claim through the at-fault side.
  7. Do not sign tow authorisations or repair authorisations at the roadside unless you understand them.

If the other driver is uninsured, or gives false details, the claim is harder but not impossible. A credit hire provider will assess it, and your own insurer may be the fallback. See credit hire vs claiming your own insurance.

Questions people ask

Is a merge crash on the M4 always the merging driver's fault?
No. In New South Wales, the driver already established in the lane has right of way over a driver entering from an on-ramp, but fault can shift if the lane driver changed lanes into the merging car or sped up to close a gap. Insurers often settle merge crashes on a split when the accounts conflict and there is no footage. Dashcam video showing the lane markings and the moment of contact is the single most useful piece of evidence you can hold.
Can a replacement car be delivered to Granville the same day?
In most cases, yes, if the claim is accepted in the morning. Delivery covers Granville, South Granville, Clyde, Harris Park, Rosehill and Parramatta, and can be to your home, workplace or the repairer. You will need your licence and a card for the bond. The bond equals the excess you choose, and paying by card carries a small surcharge while bank transfer and cash on the rental do not.
What if the other driver's insurer denies liability?
A denial does not automatically stop your replacement car. The credit hire provider reviews the evidence and can continue to fund the hire while the dispute is resolved between the provider and the insurer. You should keep every photo, message and repairer update, and forward them to the provider. If the dispute continues, it is handled between the provider and the insurer, not by you personally.
How long can I keep the replacement car?
You can keep it while your car is being repaired, provided the repair time is reasonable and not delayed by you. If the repairer is waiting on a part from interstate or overseas, the hire continues. The hire ends when your car is repaired and ready to collect, so return it the same day or the next. Extensions are routine if you ask before the expected return date.
Do I have to use my own insurer?
No. If you are not at fault, you can claim through the at-fault driver's insurer and use credit hire for the replacement car, leaving your own policy and no-claim bonus alone. You should still notify your own insurer of the crash as most policies require it, but you do not have to lodge a claim with them. Talk to your insurer about your obligations under your policy.
What if my car is a write-off?
If your car is a total loss, the credit hire rules change. The hire may continue for a shorter period while you find a replacement, and the claim shifts to the agreed value or market value of the car. Keep the hire provider informed as soon as you know the car is a write-off. See the write-offs page on this site for how the process differs from a repairable claim.
